- The magnificent mediaeval castle that we see today at Dover dates back to the 12th century, and has long be key to the defence of England. The site has been used even longer, with earthworks dating back to the Iron Age. Dover Castle is a popular tourist attraction today, and the wartime tunnels in the cliffs beneath the castle are of great interest.
