- Dover: the Gateway to England. For thousands of years Dover has been the first port of call for many visitors to England. The distance between England and France is just 21 miles across the Dover Strait, and numerous ferries cross the English Channel everyday, with over 14 million passengers a year travelling though the port. Here you can see three ferries crossing the channel, and the landmass of France is clearly visible across the water.
