- Dover: the Gateway to England. For thousands of years Dover has been the first port of call for many visitors to England. Taken from the famous White Cliffs of Dover, this picture shows a passenger ferry approaching an entrance in the harbour wall to the left. On the right, a dark cloud drops its load of rain just out to sea. The storm and the ferry are both approaching England.
