- As I was creating this bleak winter scene in monochrome, I was considering painting a single dead leaf that had fallen from the tree. Somehow this leaf transformed itself into a floating copper butterfly. The was reinforced by what Edith Wharton had written, "They seemed to come upon happiness as if they had surprised a butterfly in the winter woods." It was a perfect title!
