© 2010 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved My Auntie Rose always lived with us – Papa, Mama, Teddy and me. She was Papa’s sister and never married. We were told to be very kind to Auntie Rose, because she was living an unusual life. You see, Auntie Rose was a midget. Well, I know now the correct term is ‘little person’ but when I was a girl that’s what we called short people – not, of course, to their faces. Papa told us Auntie Rose has been born too early and just never grew like most people. I remember how much fun it was to spend time with Auntie. She may have been short, but she was fun and always happy to come with us when we’d go picnicking or flying kites down at the shore. She’d read to us, too – exciting stories of ‘exotical adventures’ (that’s what she called them), and she would always stop after the most exciting chapters, leaving me and Teddy breathless and anxious for the next installment. Mama told us we shouldn’t bother Auntie when she was in her room, but if one of us knocked she always invited us in. She had all kinds of treasures in her room, for when she was young she’d travelled all over the world, seeing the sights and coming home with trunks full of things she’d collected along the way. This is the corner of Auntie’s room, with her tiny hat, coat and scarf hanging on a dress form that was specially made for her. And on the wall, she had hung her favorite painting, a copy of Raphael’s ‘Madonna of the Chair’, that she’d bought in “Florence, It’ly from a little old I-talyan man outside the museum.” ~ from the diary of Ellen Fall (1889-1965)
