I’m Glad You Are Not Mine
I’m glad you are not mine, little goldenhair,
despite the fact that your constant smile is like
the pale, late winter sun
casting highlights on a dreary landscape.
Even though you coo and chatter with delight,
Neanderthal syllables pouring from your mouth,
I’m glad you are not mine.
To see you playing with a shoe
as though it were a fresh invention of the gods
is to witness the dawn of discovery,
yet I’m glad you are not mine.
To borrow you brings much delight but,
sweetest girl,
I have served my time in the trenches:
cuddling, suckling, diapering, lullabying,
drying tears and runny noses.
I have been discharged – relieved of active duty –
from day-to-day soldiering,
armed with cornstarch powder, wipe’n’dipes,
plastic cups and pureed food –
I’m through.
I will save a special place in the reserves for you.
Still, baby girl, I’m glad you are not mine.
