- © 2010 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved During WWII, the German air force conducted a relentless bombing campaign against the British. Huge numbers of aircraft regularly flew over the country, causing massive damage to Britain's landscape and infrastructure as well as bringing death to close to 50,000 civilians; half of these were residents of London. Beginning on September 7, 1940, London was bombed for 76 consecutive nights. In addition to those killed, the Blitz destroyed or heavily damaged over a million residences in London alone. But the Germans also conducted lethal air raids against some of Britain's major industrial and military sites, including Belfast, Liverpool, Aberdeen, Coventry, Manchester and Southampton, to name just a few. Altogether, some 60,000 innocent non-combatants were killed throughout Germany's air raids on the British Isles, which continued even after the major assaults on London finally ended on May 10, 1941. This includes almost 9,000 people killed by drone V-1 bombs and V-2 rockets that were launched from the continent in 1944. This is an aerial view of part of the city of London after one such raid.
