- Artist Notes
- © 2010 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved Jan Frederic Gronovius was a Dutch botanist active in the 18th century. He named this beautiful flower, native to the Transvaal region in South Africa, 'gerbera' in 1737 to commemorate an obscure German physician and naturalist, Traugott Gerber. Gerber died at the age of 33 in Russia, where he was practicing medicine, teaching and overseeing the creation of a medicinal garden in Moscow. No one has ever discovered why Gronovius chose Gerber as the person for whom this member of the daisy species is named...it's a botanical mystery.
