How Much Do I Make Per Print Sale?

The profit you make per print is simple and straightforward. You add what you want to the base price; you keep all the profits on top of the base price. It’s totally up to you how much you want to make per print sale!
Here is how the revenue sharing works in a practical sense:

Canvas Print 20"x30"
Base Price (printing cost): $68
Retail Price: (price print sells for) $200
Profit: $200 - $68 = $132

NOTE: these prices may not reflect the prices of your work.

Paying the Artist

The artist is paid MONTHLY based on sales from artwork. At the end of each MONTH, we take out all printing costs (base price) associated with your artwork and pass the remaining profit on to you, it’s that simple! You are able to control your pricing options (with profit, base price and sale price broken down for you) using the tools in the Artist Access Center.
We have two methods for payouts:

PayPal: No fee attached
Check: Checks sent to United States residents have no fee associated. Checks sent to pay international artists (outside the continental United States) require a $6 fee, which will be withdrawn from the payout). Payouts sent via check must be of at least $20.00 USD.

NOTE: Payouts are made for the preceding month’s sales on or before the 20th of the next month.

NOTE: This chart should be used as a general guideline regarding image size, and will not always reflect either a poor of excellent quality of print. Print File Submission FAQ

We strive for great quality in our reproduction work, and it all starts with having a great source from which to print!

How are my print files protected?
The Untapped Source takes intellectual copyright laws and image protection VERY SERIOUSLY. All print files are completely protected and stored offline to protect your intellectual property.

How large can my print file be?
Files submitted through The Artist Access Center can be up to 100 megabytes. Files do NOT necessarily need to be massive in megabyte count to produce great prints. The larger the file, the longer it will take to upload to our system, which in turn leaves more room for technical errors to occur during the upload process. Technical errors are rare, but they may include such things as Internet time outs. Once you have reached the crop tool, you are assured that your file has uploaded properly.

How long does the print approval process take?
Prints submitted to The Untapped Source Gallery are approved for a maximum printing size within 24-48 hours. Your artwork will appear as “pending” until approved. The Untapped Source retains the right to determine maximum printing size, but will always take your suggestions into consideration, as you know your artwork best.

What resolution do you print at?
Prints are done at a minimum of 100 and a max of 300 resolution. The Canon Imagprograf print systems we use create exquisite prints! We use the best print system on the market.

We strive for great quality in our reproduction work, and it all starts with having a great source from which to print!

Do I have to submit an image at a ratio (size) that exactly matches a print size currently offered by The Untapped Source?
Yes. Print files uploaded though The Artist Access Center are processed by an automated system upon initial upload. If your print file does not match one of our selected ratios, you will be asked to crop your image using our custom cropping tool. The cropping tool will automatically tell you the ratio your image is closest to but you do have the option to chose another ratio if you prefer.

My piece is not the resolution/DPI/pixel count you recommend. Can it still be displayed and reproduced for sale in The Untapped Source Gallery?
Yes. We will always examine the image to make sure it is print-worthy and at what sizes. The best way to determine max print size is to set the resolution of your print file (in photoshop or like image editing program) to 72 resolution and examine it at 100%. From there you can play around with the image size to see exactly what maximum sizes your artwork will print too. This is a somewhat crude, but rather effective method for the non-print specialists among us. Make sure your work is not saved after this little test as you don’t want to lose any file quality through an unnecessary error in saving, etc…

NOTE: Our system will not accept files under 1000x1000 pixels.

What file type should I use when submitting my work for printing?
Your printable file should be a .JPG or PNG. The final file you submit should be derived from your original, full size printable file. All artwork submitted to The Untapped Source is resized automatically for the web. The Untapped Source recommends the .JPG (JPEG) format saved at max quality. This will cut down on the size of the printable file in Megabytes, which will in turn cut down on the room for error as the file will be in transit across the web for a shorter period of time.

NOTE: The recommended format is .JPG saved at the maximum level (in photoshop, that level would be "12") for print files. If you prefer to keep your work saved in a lossless format, please use .PNG format.

What is DPI?
DPI is short for "Dots Per Inch" and means the number of printed dots per square inch of a print. The more dots per inch, the smoother and generally higher quality the print will be. The dimension in pixels of your image on any given length divided by the DPI will give you the size of your print for that dimension. For example, if you had a 3000 x 2000 image, printing at 100 DPI would yield a 30" x 20" print. Printing that same image at 1000 DPI would yield a 3" x 2" print.

What is an aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is a measurement of the proportion of your image. The largest side divided by the smallest side of your image will give you your aspect ratio. Aspect ratios are typically presented in the format #:1 -- that is, # pixels on your largest side for each 1 pixel on your shortest side. A 3000 x 2000 image would have an: (3000 / 2000) = 1.5:1 aspect ratio.

The Untapped Source prints at the following ratios: 1/1.5, 1/1.33, 1/1.25, 1/1.4, 1/1.67, 1/2.5, 1x1, 1/1.2, and 1/1.27
,
Why can't I just resize my image to a larger size?
Resizing (or "resampling") adds pixels to your image to make it larger. The problem is that the larger you resample, the less of your original image quality is present in your print. You have a specific amount of quality and detail in your original image, and "resampling" will only decrease those. Careful resampling in small steps, can be an effective way to slightly increase your printable dimensions, generally up one printable size.

What are The Untapped Source guidelines regarding copyrighted images?
It is the responsibility of each artist featured in our galleries to research the copyright validity of the work they submit for display and sale. The Untapped Source will try it's best to not display for sale work that is obviously an infringement on a copyright or trademark, and if an issue of the sort comes to our attention, work will be immediately taken off of the site until the issue is resolved. We take copyright issues very seriously.

Is my personal information secure?
Absolutely! We will never distribute or sell the personal information you provide via your Untapped Source account. This includes email addresses, credit card info, phone number, or any other personal data. Please see our privacy policy.
